| Marge Lial | Marge Lial was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge is a familiar face at mathematics conferences held across the country. She has served on various boards and committees in a lifelong effort to keep student needs at the forefront of mathematics education. Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books, as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks, involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan. | John Hornsby | When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics, education, or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and ten years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized. The 1998 worktext series brings his writings to a total of 29 books he has co-authored since 1990. His love for teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. He followed the Cleveland Indians for forty years before they were good, and now is rejoicing in their glory. He also sponsors youth league teams on which his sons participate. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s, and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. |

| Stan Salzman | Stan Salzman has been teaching at American River College for 29 years. Stan primarily teaches business classes rather than pure mathematics courses. His experience in applied math classes, ranging from business math to marketing and real estate, has made him an invaluable member of the author team. Stan began writing Basic College Mathematics when his colleague and friend, Chuck Miller, needed a co-author on his new series of texts. Stan is a building contractor and was involved with California real estate for almost three years before moving into academia. He received a Bachelor's degree in business and industrial management at San Jose State University. Stan also received an MBA at the same school with a concentration in real estate. When not writing books, Stan enjoys collecting toy trains (the S-gauge being his favorite) and spending time with his wife and four children. |
| Diana Hestwood | Diana Hestwood attributes her affinity for mathematics to her father (to whom she dedicated Basic College Mathematics, 4th edition). Her father taught her that mathematics was a way of interpreting the world. Knowing how things work, he taught her, and knowing the math of things leads us to be able to understand them, then mold the world around us. Hence, Diana embarked on her mathematics career. Diana, a dynamic and caring teacher, began teaching math at the elementary school level. She is very interested in her students' various cultures and needs. In conjunction to working in the math department, Diana also works with the Office for Students with Disabilities. Many of the applications in the new edition of Basic College Mathematics relate to Diana's interests outside of the classroom. Bird-watching, gardening, studying the history of Minnesota, and working on her cabin built in the Finnish tradition, are among these interests. Diana lives in Minnesota and teaches at the Minneapolis Community and Technical College. |
| Charles D. Miller | Chuck was a renowned author of many books and a respected educator.
