Off the Roof
In order to install cedar shingles on a roof,
the builder must create at least a 5:12 ratio between the height of the
attic and the
half-width of the house. As shown in the
diagram below:

If you want a 24 foot wide house, what is the
height that the attic can have?
For a 30 foot wide home, what is the attic height?
What is the width of the house if the attic height is 8 feet?
The only requirement for the shingle installation
is the minimum height of the attic to the fixed width. Would there
be a maximum
height as well? Why or why not?
If you wished to build a playhouse in the back
yard that was 1/4 scale of your 30 foot wide home, what would be the height
and width dimensions?
